Your LinkedIn Profile Is a Resume That Never Sleeps

LinkedIn · April 9, 2026 · 12 min read

You spent hours perfecting your resume. You tailored it. You quantified your bullets. You formatted it for ATS compatibility. Then you sent it out and waited.

But here's what you probably didn't do: you didn't touch your LinkedIn profile.

Your resume gets you through the front door. Your LinkedIn profile is the door people knock on when they're looking for someone like you. And for most professionals, that door is locked, broken, or invisible.

LinkedIn is not a resume. Stop treating it like one.

Your resume is optimized for a machine reader. Your LinkedIn profile is optimized for a human reader who's deciding whether to click "message" or keep scrolling. One is a sniper rifle. The other is a lighthouse. You need both.

Your headline is your billboard

LinkedIn gives you 220 characters for your headline. Most people waste it on their job title and company name.

Bad: "Marketing Manager at TechCorp"

Better: "Marketing Manager at TechCorp. Built demand gen programs that drove $4M in pipeline across 3 verticals."

No emojis. No pipes between every word. Use LinkedIn's built-in "Open to Work" feature set to recruiters only.

The About section is where you win or lose

The first line is the hook. "I took over an account that was 90 days from cancellation and turned it into a $2.1B portfolio." That's a first line. Now they're reading.

Write the whole thing in first person. If it sounds like a robot wrote it, rewrite it.

Skills are your search engine

Your skills section is one of the primary ways LinkedIn's search algorithm determines whether your profile appears in recruiter searches. Your first three skills should be exact keywords a recruiter would search for.

Recommendations are social proof that converts

Don't ask for generic recommendations. Give people a prompt. Specific prompts produce specific recommendations.
